Spring Type

Constant Force Springs

Constant force springs are pre-stressed strips of spring material wound into a tight coil. As the strip is extended from the coil, it produces a nearly constant linear force across a long working travel.

Working Principle

How this spring type works.

The strip is formed with a natural curvature and stored on a drum or mandrel. Pulling the free end progressively uncoils the strip while the material attempts to return to its original radius, creating a stable retracting force with minimal change over the designed stroke.

Key Features

Design characteristics.

  • Nearly constant output force over extended travel
  • Compact energy storage compared with long helical springs
  • Custom strip width, thickness, coil diameter, force, and travel
